History of Cineworld

The Cineworld Group plc was founded in 1995 by Steve Wiener and the first theatre was opened in Hertfordshire in July 1996. Later, a second was opened in Wakefield in December 1996 and a third in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, in 1998.

Over the next 10 to 20 years Wiener and his team used acquisitions and combinations to grow the brand. The first was in 2004 when the brand acquired UK operations of UGC, then again in 2012 after the acquisition of the Picturehouse chain of cinemas.
