The Wembley Park Community Fund Case Study – Musicus

Musicus CIC is one of the charities that have benefited from the 2017 Wembley Park Community Fund. Since September last year, it has been delivering the Yellow Pavilion Guitar programme. These free classes offer tutor lead lessons for an hour per week every Thursday and are open to local people of all ages. The project has enabled participants to access free high quality guitar tuition in a fun and friendly environment. In some cases, whole families have learned alongside each other.

The Impact so far

To date, over 100 people have attended the lessons, and the project has reached members of the community who may not have access to private music classes. Participants also develop soft skills, such as increased confidence and learning how to work as part of a group. Members of the session with more musical experience are also encouraged to mentor the beginners in each group and to provide peer support.

Often, those involved will have limited interaction with other age groups, and bringing participants together to work collaboratively breaks down these barriers and dispels perceived stereotypes.
Bringing the community together decreases the potential for older members of the group to be isolated, and broadens the outlook of younger participants. Musical expression is rewarding, and research has shown that learning an instrument in later years can lessen the impact of Alzheimer’s, and can help reduce cognitive impairment.

The Future

Later in the project, the groups will come together for a public concert at a local community event or festival. Audiences and participants will also gain the opportunity to work with and observe professional musicians who will perform and provide a masterclass and community concert. The band consists of top professional musicians, who have played all around the world in venues including Ronnie Scott’s and the 606. These community events will be open to all residents in the area.

I really like learning the tunes, and I play them without the music now.
