We’re heating up Arena Square this summer and teaming up with Tongues on Fire to bring you a season of amazing South Asian films all for FREE!

Playing throughout June and July, the specially curated collection of films celebrate some of the very best South Asian cinema hits. To make it EVEN better, the selection of blockbusters are from a range of different genres and languages.

And we’ve gone all out for these screenings, with some of the most sensational pre-show entertainment for EVERY single show (that’s right, every single show!). This is far more than just an amazing FREE cinema screening, it’s a whole hurrah with entertainment and a food and bar area so you can grab some snacks. What’s the cinema without some nibbles, right?

DHH South Asian Cinema Guide Wembley Park

Gujarati with English Subtitles.

This heart-warming story is about three friends, Gungun, Bajrang and Vakil, and their journey towards releasing their full potential. An afternoon of sauntering leads them to a magic show and leaves them awestruck. Magic, it seems is a solution for all their problems including mathematics! The boys write to the Magician asking him for a trick to ace their examinations. Days go by and times get tougher with punishments at school and warnings at home. All hope is lost, but one fine day the Magician replies! His letter arrives with a parcel that claims to hold the key to cracking their examinations. Can this be true? In pursuit of learning from magic, the three boys soon realise that there is a lot more learning to be done from life itself.

Movies Memories Magic South Asian Cinema Guide Wembley Park

Movies, Memories, Magic celebrates the hybrid cinematic and cultural heritage sculpted by London’s South Asian communities across time and space. Cinema has served as a vital bridge between cultures and countries, for South Asians in Britain. This documentary is the result of a year-long Heritage-supported South Asian heritage project – Memories Through Cinema, led by the UK Asian Film Festival (UKAFF) in collaboration with Queen Mary, University of London. The film paints a vibrant picture of how iconic South Asian films such as Mother India (1957) and Sholay (1975) screened in renowned cinema halls in London, from the winding alleyways of Brick Lane to the bustling streets of Wembley and Southall. The project received a Queen Mary University Community Engagement Award in November 2018.

Pre-show entertainment:
Get warmed up with nostalgic British-Indian hit music prior to the screening. Then, starting from 7pm, we have an insightful Q&A from the film’s cast and director, Dr Ashvin Immanuel Devasundaram, who will also introduce the screening.

Life Goes On South Asian Films Summer on Screen Wembley Park

Set in London, this drama inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear that explores the relations between a grief stricken father and his three daughters. With his wife’s sudden death, Sanjay is suddenly thrown into close proximity with his three daughters. Haunted by memories, grappling with the devastating loss, missing the mediating influence of his wife, Sanjay finds himself assessing and carving out new relations with his three daughters.

Pre-show entertainment:
Hear firsthand from legendary Bollywood actress, Sharmila Tagore, and film director, Sangeeta Datta, who will be part of an insightful Q&A panel along with the film’s cast.

Celebrating South Asian culture and its vibrancy, Tongues on Fire are a not-for-profit organisation who are dedicated to providing a platform for independent film and arts that have a link to South Asia. Far beyond just cinema screenings, Tongues on Fire give emerging talent the chance to showcase their work, create networking opportunities with industry leaders and give wider learning opportunities for the film-making community. 

A big part of their work is the UK Asian Film Festival, which aims to entertain, inform and educate. Going strong for over 19 years, the annual film festival champions arts and cinema than intertwine political and social messages. Showcasing feature films, documentaries, short films, panel discussions, and educational and community screenings, the festival provides a unique platform for Asians working in film and media around the world.
